Premium Rate Numbers beginning 09xx terminate to Premium Rate Services, and are used for a variety of functions ranging from on-line racing results, to live professional advice, technical support, chat and adult services.
PRNs are used for revenue generation or as a means of payment collection via the customer telephone bill. Rates range from 5ppm to £1.50 per minute, and can also be charged on a per-call basis (e.g. £1pc).
Due to their potential for abuse, and because of the nature of some adult services offered, services accessed via 09 numbers have received much negative press in the past. As a consequence many corporate switchboards and mobile operators automatically barr the dialling of all PRNs unless the subscriber specifically opts-in.
Strict guidelines must be adhered to when considering which type of service and per minute rate is appropriate for the service you want to offer.
