VoIP Migration

Migrating from standard ISDN to a full- or partial- Voice over IP implementation is an undertaking needing careful management at each stage.

Before any live traffic can be passed, the reliability of the data link to be used should be evaluated to ensure that a minimum quality of service is maintained at all times. Poorly managed data flow can easily monopolise the capacity of any broadband or leased-line connection, rendering call quality choppy at best, or non-existant at worst. For this reason DSL broadband should only be considered for homeworkers, or for very small office environments. Data circuits (Leased line, Lan Extension) are preferable, as the capacity is usually uncontended and a degree of control over quality of service is possible.

The VoIP protocol (SIP, H.232) should then be considered in conjunction with the type of circuit to be used. Each setup should be designed bearing in mind at all times the maximum number of concurrent users, the available capcity and the minimum quality of service that would likely be entertained.

Once implemented, there is no reason why a carefully planned migration to VoIP should not enable a company to make substantial call savings on:
